9 Important Things to Remember When Naming Your Company

You only really want to name your company once.

Question: What is one key thing I need to keep in mind when naming my company?

Intuition

"When my business partner and I started Bad Rhino, we had brainstormed a lot of names and then wrote all of them down on the whiteboard. When saying each out loud, there was only one that stuck for both of us. We just wanted a name that made people ask, "What is Bad Rhino?" It works every time. You'll know when you've found the perfect name."

Originality

"When deciding your name, Google it and find out if there are other companies using that name. Also, check to see if the name is trademarked! It can cost you a lot of time and money down the road to change your name, so make sure you get it right the first time. A lawyer can help you with this."

Memorability

"All my successes have come from building a solid Internet presences and creating a solid online marketing scheme around that. Naming my companies has required ensuring some sort of legitimate domain is available for that name. The second criteria has been to include my service or product in the name. Finally making the name memorable has been crucial."

Accessibility

"It's incredibly important that your company can be easily found on Google, or any social media sites you'll be active on. Generic names or words that are made up of simple generic words, are incredibly hard to brand. You'll spend thousands of dollars for your customers to find you that can be allocated towards a better ROI elsewhere."

Spelling

"For every company with a misspelt or abbreviated name, hundreds and thousands of potential customers are lost every day. I don't want to have to learn how to spell your company name. Think of it like SEO at the lowest level. Your team will also make mistakes. Autocorrect is unforgiving."

Intuitiveness

"Think about doing a search. You type in words of the service you are looking for. So, ideally, the name of your company has the service(s) you offer in the name. This way when doing a search, your clients are more likely find you organically. It should be a name people (likely) know how to spell, and it should be easy to understand what you have to offer!"

Stickiness

"It has to be easy to understand, easy to spell and sticky, and be open to the name not working. We changed our brand name from Madison Plus Select to Hey Gorgeous a year after we launched. Since we were still a young company we could make the change without the consequences that a large company may face. Our investors love it and most importantly, it has been great for my ego."

Consistency

"Keeping your brand name consistent across all mediums and platforms can be difficult. After finding out if your name doesn't have any trademark issues, you'll want to see if it's available from a domain name and social media handle perspective. The more confusing it is for your audience to keep up with your different names for each platform, the less likely you are to engage with them."
